US ruling elite rejects policy shift to confront disaster

My answer to this would be this is why we fought the Cold War, so "world socialists" couldn't intervene to help the downtrodden masses. "World socialists" were depicted all through my formative years as godless commies straight from the pit of hell. The average Joes and Janes of America sided with their elite oppressors and now must live (or just subsist, in many cases) with the consequences.
