Personal and confidential: To Edgar Newton Eisenhower, 8 November 1954

Eisenhower was born in Denison, Texas, but he never claimed to be a Texan. This letter with its derogatory reference to Hunt and the Texas oil millionaires may explain why. A few years later as he left office he warned us of the influence of the military-industrial complex, also centered in Texas with overlapping connnections to the oil industry.

Within five years, his prophecy began coming true with a vengeance in the jungles of Southeast Asia.

I am convinced that most of the bloodshed of the past 50 years can be blamed on Texans.
